If your showerhead is leaking, you may need to get a new one. So, what do you do if your water heater starts leaking? Is it time to get a new water heater or replace the old one? Not necessarily! A leaking water heater could either need to be replaced or simply repaired. If it needs maintenance, you should have it done as soon as possible to avoid buying a new one too soon. Learn the signs that indicate it's time to replace your system rather than merely fix it.
When a Leak Requires Repairs?
Sometimes a water heater leakage is nothing to worry about. It could be as simple as needing to tighten or replace a part. This can be encouraging because fixing something is typically much less expensive than replacing it. To avoid further damage, contact a professional as soon as you realize your water heater needs repair.
In most cases, a leak in a water heater that is less than ten years old and has been properly maintained can be fixed with minimal effort. You can always try yourself to determine where the leak is coming from. Simply put, you can inspect the area around your heater for a leaking pipe or connection. If this is not something you are comfortable with or don't want to take any chances, then it's time to get in touch with a repair service.
Signs You Need Water Heater Replacement
Most homeowners give their water heater more thought once there's a problem with the water's temperature or quality. Still, if you pay attention, your water heater will provide you with subtle clues that it's time to replace it.
- Strange Noise – Any sudden, loud, or odd noises emanating from your hot water tank are usually due to silt building at the bottom of the tank. A certified plumber may be able to fix this by flushing the tank, but if the water heater is severely damaged, it may be time to replace it with a new one.
- Rusty Water – Water discoloration is always concerning, but if the problem is happening with your hot water, the culprit is probably rust. Corrosion could be a symptom of a deteriorating tank or be located in the pipes.
- Old Age – Your hot water tank has an average lifespan of eight to twelve years, so it's a good idea to start planning for replacement as you near the ten-year milestone.
- Lack of Hot Water – Your water heater's efficiency will decrease as its lifespan nears its end, and it may no longer be able to keep up with the needs of your home.
- Water Leakage – Due to the metal's inherent tendency to expand and contract as it is heated and cooled, water leaks may occur over time. A licensed & certified plumber can inspect a leaky hot water tank and advise on whether the tank should be repaired or replaced.
What a Leak Means. Do You Need a Replacement?
Replacement of the water heater is a necessity that inevitably arises. Leaking water heaters are sometimes beyond repair and must be replaced. A leak in a tank-style water heater tank is a sure symptom of corrosion, and the unit should be replaced as soon as possible. You must replace the entire unit if your water heater tank indicates a leak.
If you cannot find the source of the leak, other factors, such as the system's age (more than 10–15 years) or the presence of discolored water, may indicate that it's time to replace it. Indicators that a system has to be retired, especially when paired with a leak.
