How this works
A working range, not a wild guess.
Square footage, insulation, what's heating the house today, and what bugs you about it — that's enough to frame the right system type and size range. The exact number always comes from a Manual-J load calculation, which we run on every install. This tool gets you to that conversation informed.

Step 1 of 5 · Your home
Roughly how big is the space you're heating & cooling?
Conditioned square footage only — skip the garage and unfinished basement. A close guess is plenty at this stage.
Sizing, honestly
Why we give ranges, not prices.
Two identical floor plans on the same street can need different systems. These are the questions Cornelius-area homeowners ask us most about sizing — answered the way the owner answers them in your kitchen.
Ask us · (503) 442-5964Is this estimator a quote?
No. It suggests a system type and a size range so you can research with realistic expectations. Pricing depends on equipment tier, ductwork, electrical scope, and installation details — which is why we quote every job in person, after a Manual-J load calculation.
What is a Manual-J load calculation?
It's the industry-standard, room-by-room math that determines how much heating and cooling your specific house needs — accounting for insulation, windows, orientation, and air leakage. It's the difference between a system sized for your home and one sized for a square-footage rule of thumb. We run one on every install.
Why does oversizing matter if bigger heats faster?
An oversized system short-cycles: it blasts on, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it dehumidifies or evens out the rooms. You pay more upfront for worse comfort and more wear. Right-sized equipment runs longer, gentler cycles — that's what comfort actually feels like.
Do heat pumps really work in Oregon winters?
Yes — the Tualatin Valley's mild, wet winters are close to ideal heat-pump territory. Modern cold-climate models hold their capacity well below freezing, and homes with an existing gas furnace can pair the two (dual fuel) so the furnace only runs on the coldest mornings.
