What Is AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction)?
Definition
The AHJ is whichever government office actually has legal authority to issue permits and conduct inspections for a given address — in the Portland metro this varies by both city and permit type, so the AHJ for a mechanical permit and an electrical permit on the same house is sometimes two different offices.
Why it matters for your home
Knowing your correct AHJ before work starts avoids a contractor pulling a permit from the wrong office, which can delay a final inspection or, worse, mean the work was never actually permitted correctly.
What to do about it
Check the permits & licensing guide for your specific city's AHJ for both mechanical and electrical work before assuming they're the same office.
