Heat Pumps & Mini-Splits
What Is Reversing Valve?
Definition
The reversing valve is the component that lets a heat pump switch between heating and cooling mode — it physically redirects the flow of refrigerant so the same outdoor and indoor coils can either absorb heat from outside (winter) or reject heat outside (summer). It's a part standard air conditioners simply don't have.
Why it matters for your home
A stuck reversing valve is a common reason a heat pump gets "stuck" blowing cool air when it should be heating, or vice versa — it's a specific, diagnosable failure, not a sign the whole system needs replacing.
What to do about it
If your heat pump is blowing the wrong temperature air for the season, mention that specifically when booking service — it points a technician straight at likely causes like the reversing valve.
