Air Conditioning
What Is Condenser (Outdoor Unit)?
Definition
The condenser is the outdoor unit of a split AC or heat pump system — it contains the compressor, the outdoor coil, and the fan that rejects heat pulled from inside the house (or, for a heat pump in winter, absorbs heat from outside air). It's the half of the system most exposed to weather and debris.
Why it matters for your home
Airflow across the condenser coil is what lets the whole system reject heat efficiently — a unit buried in leaves, grass clippings, or too close to a fence works harder and wears out faster for reasons that have nothing to do with the equipment's quality.
What to do about it
Keep at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides of the outdoor unit and hose off visible debris from the fins between professional tune-ups.
