What Is Refrigerant Charge?
Definition
Refrigerant charge is the exact amount of refrigerant an air conditioner or heat pump needs to move heat correctly — set by the manufacturer to a specific weight, not "topped off" like motor oil. Too little or too much both hurt performance and can damage the compressor over time.
Why it matters for your home
A system that's "low on Freon" almost always has a leak somewhere in the line set or coil — refilling it without finding and fixing the leak just means paying for the same refrigerant again next season.
What to do about it
If a technician recommends adding refrigerant, ask where the leak is and how it'll be repaired, not just topped off.
