Heat Pumps & Mini-Splits
What Is Matched System (Indoor/Outdoor Pairing)?
Definition
A matched system pairs an outdoor condenser/heat pump unit and indoor coil or air handler that the manufacturer specifically designed and rated to work together — same manufacturer, compatible capacity and airflow specs. Mixing an old indoor coil with a new outdoor unit ("mismatched") is possible but sacrifices efficiency and can void warranties.
Why it matters for your home
A mismatched system can under-perform its rated efficiency, run less reliably, and lose manufacturer warranty coverage — worth asking about directly if a bid only replaces the outdoor unit and reuses the existing indoor coil.
What to do about it
Ask explicitly whether your replacement quote is a full matched system or a partial (outdoor-only) replacement, and what that means for your warranty.
