What Is Short-Cycling?

Definition

Short-cycling is when a heating or cooling system turns on, runs for only a few minutes, and shuts off again — repeatedly — instead of running a normal, longer cycle. It's usually a symptom of an oversized system or a control/airflow problem, not normal behavior.

Why it matters for your home

A short-cycling system wears out faster (every start-up stresses components), runs up your utility bill, and never dehumidifies or heats evenly because it never runs long enough to do the job right.

What to do about it

If your system cycles on and off every few minutes, especially right after an install, ask whether it was sized off an actual load calculation or just "same as before" — oversizing is the most common cause.
