Indoor Air Quality
What Is UV / Electronic Air Cleaner?
Definition
A UV air cleaner uses ultraviolet light installed inside the ductwork or air handler to disrupt mold, bacteria, and viruses as air passes by; an electronic air cleaner instead charges particles so they're attracted to a collector plate, capturing finer particles than a standard filter alone.
Why it matters for your home
These are add-ons to your existing filtration, not replacements for a good filter or duct sealing — they target different problems (biological growth for UV, fine particulate for electronic cleaners) than a MERV-rated filter alone solves.
What to do about it
Ask what specific problem you're solving (odor/mold vs. fine dust/smoke) before choosing between UV and electronic air cleaner add-ons — they're not interchangeable.
