Indoor Air Quality
What Is Whole-Home Filtration vs. Portable Air Purifier?
Definition
Whole-home filtration treats air as it circulates through your existing HVAC ductwork, conditioning every room the system serves from one central point; a portable air purifier treats only the air in the single room it sits in, independent of the HVAC system.
Why it matters for your home
A portable unit can help in one bedroom overnight, but it does nothing for the air in the rest of the house — whole-home filtration is the better fit if your goal is consistent air quality everywhere the ductwork reaches.
What to do about it
Match the tool to the goal: portable for one problem room, whole-home filtration for the whole house — and check whether your ducts and blower can support a higher-MERV whole-home filter before buying one.
