What Is AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)?

Definition

AFUE is the percentage of the fuel a gas furnace burns in a full heating season that actually becomes heat inside the home — the rest escapes up the flue as exhaust. A furnace rated 95% AFUE turns 95 cents of every gas dollar into warmth; an older 80% AFUE unit sends 20 cents up the flue. It's the efficiency rating the U.S. Department of Energy requires on every gas furnace sold.

Why it matters for your home

In the Tualatin Valley's long, damp heating season that 15-point gap compounds over months of runtime — and Energy Trust of Oregon currently pays $1,600 toward a qualifying 95%+ AFUE furnace for NW Natural, Cascade, or Avista gas customers (see the current rebate table), which narrows the price gap between tiers.

What to do about it

Ask any furnace bid for the AFUE rating in writing, not just "high-efficiency." If you're comparing a repair against replacement on a furnace older than 12-15 years, the AFUE jump alone is often worth pricing against the Energy Trust rebate before deciding.

Money term — the details

How is AFUE tested?
Manufacturers test AFUE under standardized DOE lab conditions, not real-world duct losses or installation quality — which is why installation still matters as much as the rating on the box.
Does a higher AFUE furnace cost more to install?
Usually yes upfront, because condensing units need new venting and a condensate drain that an 80% unit doesn't. See what actually determines furnace replacement price for the full breakdown.
What rebates apply to a high-AFUE furnace in Oregon?
See the Oregon rebates & incentives guide for the current, sourced, dated figure — amounts change, so that page (not this one) is the number of record.
