Heating
What Is Heat Exchanger?
Definition
The heat exchanger is the sealed metal chamber inside a gas furnace where combustion happens — it transfers heat from burning gas into the air your ducts circulate, without ever letting combustion byproducts mix with that air. It's the one furnace part where a failure is a safety issue, not just a comfort one.
Why it matters for your home
A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide leak into your home's air supply — it's the reason annual gas furnace inspection is a safety measure, not an upsell.
What to do about it
Pair working CO alarms on every floor with a bedroom with an annual furnace inspection. If a technician tells you your heat exchanger is cracked, that furnace should be shut down until repaired or replaced — this isn't a "get a second opinion eventually" situation.
