Keeping Your Home Cool and Heat Your Home Without Blasting the HVAC

Modern living room with a cozy sofa, decorative pillows, and stylish furniture, showcasing a bright interior with natural light from large windows, plants, and a welcoming atmosphere, relevant to home comfort and HVAC discussions.

We can't deny that HVAC units make life a whole lot better! Having an HVAC system in your home makes many days with extreme temperatures much more bearable.

As with most of your favorite devices, using your HVAC system also has some downsides. The main issue with solely depending on your HVAC to keep your home comfortable is the use of power which can be costly. With electrical power bills rising, homeowners are making conscious efforts to use systems sustainably. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways to minimize your home energy expenses which are shared below.

Include Landscaping

Planting trees around your residence will add that lush greenery your home needs for a homely and relaxing aesthetic. These trees will also help provide shade and a breeze around your house which will help keep your home cooler on warm and sunny days.

Planting more trees and adding creative landscape designs to your home can also enhance the value of your house by as much as 28%. Simply ensure you do your research and find the best trees for the dimensions of your property. It's also important to know exactly where it's safe to plant the different types of trees so the roots don't interfere with any existing plumbing, gas line, or even the house structure.

If planting new trees doesn't make sense in your backyard, cover the outside unit of your HVAC called a condenser. A condenser's job is to spread the warmth removed from the inside of your house so the cooler you keep your condenser, the better it can do its job. As long as the condenser has a foot or two of open space on every side, you can install fencing or bushes around it to keep it shaded.

Keep Windows Shaded

You know what it's like when you get into a car that's been sitting in the sun for a couple of hours, well your house experiences the "warm car effect" too. This is called the "passive solar gain", which is when sunlight enters your home through windows and heats the internal air which gets trapped in that space. You can decrease the easy solar gain by keeping blinds or drapes that cover your windows closed.

Change What You Eat

In summer when it gets warm, you don't need to add to that existing warmth. Rather than using your stove or oven, adjust your diet plan so you're eating more healthy salads, fresh fruit, and other lightly cooked meals. If you need to have foods that take a longer time to cook, try using alternative methods of cooking that take less time and use less energy. A barbeque also doesn't hurt every once in a while!

Stop Using Other Heat-Making Devices

Use your washing machines, hairdryers, and irons in the late evenings or early mornings as these are off-peak times in terms of electricity usage. When it comes to lighting your home, use LED light bulbs which create less heat than incandescent light bulbs.

Reorganize Your Furniture

If you have sofas, long drapes, or other furnishings that block vents, move these around so that there's no disturbance with the airflow in your home.

Upkeep Issues

Keeping your HVAC in excellent working order will help it perform more efficiently and last for longer. A yearly check will help you discover issues before they become difficult to deal with and repair.

Customer Testimonials

See what our happy customers have to say about their experience with Best Owner Direct HVAC & Electrical and why they continue to choose us for their home comfort needs.

Been using them for years after the owner Kevin showed up so fast when our furnace went out one year. Been a fan since! Now, Danny is so great to work with, also. So friendly, knowledgable, fast. You guys are the best!

Danny came out on a Saturday to diagnosis and fix my mom’s hvac unit.   He was able to quickly determine what the problem was and had all the parts to complete the repair right then.  His communication was clear and did a really good job helping us understand what caused the issue.  I would definitely recommend him and will be calling his company with any needs in the future. Thanks again!

Fantastic customer service! I had a furnace issue, called late morning and they fit me in for diagnostic right away. Technician was extremely knowledgable, walked me thru everything he found - unfortunately needed a new furnace (was 24 years old anyways), got it scheduled and installed within 24 hours as everything was in the warehouse (probably got lucky on what we needed). Overall excellent customer service, from scheduling to diagnostic, to installation. Highly recommend.

WOW! So impressed with so many aspects of this company. We had an animal die under the house in and could smell it coming out of the vents. When I called around, pest control was weeks out and Best Owner Direct was able to come the next day. Our technician, Danny was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Very professional, kind and made sure we had the problem taken care of the same day so we could breathe again! I look forward to continuing to work with them in the future for our HVAC needs.

Daniel was excellent, attentive to detail and committed to completing all tasks other installers overlooked. He worked tirelessly into the evening making sure everything was working properly with a water heather install, and he had a great attitude all along.

Excellent customer service, great communications answering all of our questions, left the site clean, and very respectful of our space within the house. Arranged to have someone come from the office later in the week to explain how the thermostat works.

BOD is fast, efficient and affordable life save for my client who is purchasing a home with an old HVAC. Best Owner came quickly to help her asses the cost to replace it, and I will continue to recommend their services!
