Let's talk about what you need to know!

Heat-pump systems utilize a refrigeration cycle to remove heat from the air and generate hot water. The water is then heated in an insulated storage cylinder using a heat exchanger. When on a heating cycle, these systems heat water instead of the air in your home, similar to reverse-cycle air conditioners.

In a heat-pump water heater, the heat in the air comes from the sun; hence it can be considered a form of solar water heating. Unlike solar water heaters, heat pumps do not require an external power source, such as electricity or gas, to function. However, the evaporator fan and compressor, which heat the water, are powered by electricity.

Compared to a traditional electric water heater, these systems typically consume 60 to 75 percent less electricity. It's because electricity powers the heat pump, not an element that heats the water.

Heat-pump water heaters are usually installed outside on the ground. They can be fitted inside in certain circumstances. Compared to solar water heaters, collector panels don't need to be mounted on the roof, making installation more convenient. Installing them in a well-ventilated space is crucial, as they need a constant supply of ambient air to function correctly.

Heat-pump water heaters, like air conditioners, use a fan and compressor to generate noise while heating water. When they're installed, this must be taken into account. These devices should be placed away from bedrooms and in an area that doesn't disturb your neighbors' sleep patterns. When you get a price from a provider, inquire about the unit's noise level (decibels). Inquire about installation alternatives that reduce noise.

Types of Heat Pump Water Heater

Electric water heaters are two to three times more efficient than heat pumps because they don't generate heat. The quality of its system influences heat pump water heater efficiency, how well it was installed, average temperatures in your climate, and where the compressor unit is located.

Heat pump water heaters come in two varieties:

  • Split systems: The water tank and compressor are separate in a split system, just like in an air conditioning unit.
  • Integrated units: The water tank and compressor are integrated into a single unit. The entire system is typically installed outside.

How Do They Work?

Different types of water heaters use heat pumps, which use electricity to pull in and circulate nearby air, causing it to rise in temperature before emptying into the water tank.

A heat pump water heater functions in the opposite direction of a refrigerator. Heat pump water heaters draw ambient air from outside and warm it up inside rather than drawing in hot air from within and discharging it outside.

Compared to an electric water heater, which relies on electricity to generate heat, the heat pump water heater uses less energy and saves money. Instead, it takes heat from the outside and circulates it through the water, resulting in heated water.

This type of heat pump generates condensation, and you'll need to install a drainage system for it (which could be a condensation pump too).

Do Heat Pump Water Heaters Work in Cooler Environments?

Heat pump water heaters extract heat from the surrounding air and then use that heat to warm the water within the system. Heat pumps in cold climates are less efficient because they have to work more to warm the air. Temperatures between 4°C to 32°C are optimum for its use.

Because the cold air is expelled, heat pump water heaters tend to cool the surrounding area. Heat pump water heaters can help keep your home cooler in the winter; thus, this is a benefit.

For example, you could install the heat pump water heater in a furnace room containing wood-burning boiler stoves or oil-burning boilers, which would absorb the heat the boilers expel.

Been using them for years after the owner Kevin showed up so fast when our furnace went out one year. Been a fan since! Now, Danny is so great to work with, also. So friendly, knowledgable, fast. You guys are the best!

Danny came out on a Saturday to diagnosis and fix my mom’s hvac unit.   He was able to quickly determine what the problem was and had all the parts to complete the repair right then.  His communication was clear and did a really good job helping us understand what caused the issue.  I would definitely recommend him and will be calling his company with any needs in the future. Thanks again!

Fantastic customer service! I had a furnace issue, called late morning and they fit me in for diagnostic right away. Technician was extremely knowledgable, walked me thru everything he found - unfortunately needed a new furnace (was 24 years old anyways), got it scheduled and installed within 24 hours as everything was in the warehouse (probably got lucky on what we needed). Overall excellent customer service, from scheduling to diagnostic, to installation. Highly recommend.

WOW! So impressed with so many aspects of this company. We had an animal die under the house in and could smell it coming out of the vents. When I called around, pest control was weeks out and Best Owner Direct was able to come the next day. Our technician, Danny was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Very professional, kind and made sure we had the problem taken care of the same day so we could breathe again! I look forward to continuing to work with them in the future for our HVAC needs.

Excellent customer service, great communications answering all of our questions, left the site clean, and very respectful of our space within the house. Arranged to have someone come from the office later in the week to explain how the thermostat works.
